The Leonidas belongs to the Divine Line from Greece's Pilium Audio. Its unusual starting point is that an integrated amplifier should involve no compromise compared with separate components. The result is an impressive amplifier with a fully true dual-mono internal architecture. Pilium manufactures its equipment in Greece.

Each channel has its own power supply and amplifier circuits. Even the mains supplies are separate, with two independent IEC mains inlets on the rear panel. In effect, the Leonidas houses two mono power amplifiers and a high-quality preamplifier in one solid chassis.

The power supply is substantial. Each power amplifier channel uses a 1.2 kVA transformer, supplemented by separate transformers for the preamplifier sections. The power stages have a combined 200,000 µF of reservoir capacitance, with a generous reserve also provided for the preamplifier.

Output is 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms, doubling to 400 watts into 4 ohms and reaching 800 watts into 2 ohms. Beyond its high power rating, the Leonidas offers the current delivery and stability needed to maintain convincing control over demanding high-end loudspeakers.

Despite those figures, the Leonidas is not solely about brute force. It is designed to combine control and authority with speed, refinement and natural musical presentation. Very low output impedance helps control the loudspeakers, while wide frequency response and short signal paths preserve fine detail and dynamic nuance.

Source connections comprise two pairs of balanced XLR inputs and three pairs of RCA inputs. Non-audio circuitry and protection electronics are physically separated from signal processing wherever possible. A microprocessor monitors DC, temperature and the connected loudspeakers, among other parameters.

Its physical construction makes its ambitions equally clear. The solid CNC-machined chassis measures almost half a metre in both width and depth, and the amplifier weighs 100 kilograms. Although integrated in name, its construction and scale resemble a complete high-end amplifier system in one enclosure.
