This Nº585 belongs to the very top tier of Mark Levinson’s integrated amplifiers. With no less than 2 x 200 watts into 8 ohms, a fully discrete dual-mono amplifier section and a massive 900 VA power supply, the Nº585 has absolutely no trouble driving demanding loudspeakers. But power tells only part of the story. It is precisely the combination of control, calm and refinement that makes this amplifier special. The bass is powerful and tight, the midrange beautifully open and natural, and the sound remains remarkably relaxed even at higher volumes. It’s the sort of amplifier where you don’t need to be constantly fiddling with the volume to bring music convincingly to life. Full-featured built-in DAC In addition to the analogue amplifier section, the Nº585 features a high-quality built-in DAC. Digital sources can be connected directly via USB, AES/EBU, coaxial or optical. Via USB, the Nº585 supports PCM up to 32-bit/192 kHz and native DSD. This allows you to build a particularly compact yet very high-quality system around this amplifier: a good streamer or digital source, the Nº585 and a pair of speakers are, in principle, sufficient. For analogue sources, there are three RCA inputs and one balanced XLR input. Please note: the Nº585 does not have a built-in phono stage. This was added later to the Nº585.5. Solid build quality as only Mark Levinson can deliver Physically, too, the Nº585 is a true Mark Levinson. The amplifier weighs over 32 kg and features a fully differential Class AB output stage, a 900 VA toroidal transformer and twelve output transistors per channel. The output stage delivers 2 x 200 watts into 8 ohms and remains stable down to 2 ohms. This makes the Nº585 ideally suited to loudspeakers that require a little more power and, above all, current and control. This particular unit has serial number 1544. An impressive all-in-one amplifier for those seeking the power and authority of a large pre-amp/power-amp combination, but who prefer to have a single high-quality component in their audio system.
