Pass Labs X250.8

The X250.8 is one of those amplifiers that demonstrates how high power and refinement can go hand in hand. With 250 watts per channel into 8 ohms, it has more than enough power to effortlessly control even the most demanding speakers, whilst retaining the distinctive Pass Labs character. This means no overtly muscular presentation, but rather calm, suppleness and a natural richness of sound. The X250.8 sounds big and relaxed, with a solid and controlled bass, plenty of space around voices and instruments, and a beautifully fluid reproduction. Even when the music becomes more complex or the volume rises, the soundstage remains stable and natural. The X250.8 operates in Class A/B, but is relatively heavily biased. At lower power levels, it therefore benefits from many of the smooth and natural characteristics we associate with Pass Labs’ pure Class A amplifiers, whilst at the same time retaining an enormous power reserve when the speakers demand it. Technically, the X250.8 is generously built. No fewer than 56 output transistors are used per channel, and the amplifier weighs approximately 45 kilograms. Both balanced XLR and RCA connections are provided. The distinctive blue front panel meter makes the design unmistakably Pass Labs. It is precisely this combination of power and refinement that makes the X250.8 so versatile. A power amplifier that does not constantly try to show off just how impressive it is, but simply gives a loudspeaker the control, space and energy to reproduce music convincingly.
