Taken in part exchange and now available: a stunning Audion Silver Night 30th Anniversary 300B valve amplifier. The Silver Night is perhaps the amplifier with which the British brand Audion has definitively established its reputation amongst enthusiasts of single-ended triode amplifiers. The 30th Anniversary version builds on a design whose origins date back to 1987, but is fully hard-wired and constructed using Audion’s current point-to-point method. At the heart of it all, of course, are the legendary 300B direct-heated triodes. In this stereo version, the Silver Night delivers approximately 2 × 8 watts in pure Class A. That may seem modest on paper, but when paired with speakers of sufficiently high efficiency, even such a simple single-ended circuit can produce something truly special. The amplifier operates without global negative feedback and is fully point-to-point wired. Audion itself refers to this construction method as ‘Air Wired’. In addition, the Silver Night is automatically biased, so no periodic bias adjustment is required. The charm of the 300B The appeal of a good 300B amplifier lies not in brute power, but in refinement. Voices and acoustic instruments take on a natural texture, subtle dynamic nuances are beautifully preserved, and the stereo image can become remarkably open and tangible. The Silver Night does not merely seek to reproduce the classic warm 300B sound. One of the strengths of this design is precisely the combination of fluidity with speed, detail and dynamic expression. A recent review of the 300B Silver Night, for example, described how easily individual instruments and subtle differences in timbre remained audible. The 30th Anniversary is built around an aluminium chassis with a black powder-coated finish and a mirror-polished stainless steel top plate. Its relatively compact dimensions also make it considerably less imposing in the room than many other high-end valve amplifiers. For enthusiasts of high-efficiency speakers, this is therefore a particularly interesting amplifier: technically relatively simple, pure in design and entirely focused on the qualities for which the 300B is so beloved.
